About this tool

Free online metronome

A browser metronome for practicing tempo and your sense of rhythm. Choose 20–300 beats per minute or enter your pace with tap tempo.

Features

  • 1–12 beats per bar with accented, normal or silent beats
  • Equal subdivisions of two, three or four pulses per beat
  • Orbit, pendulum, beat strip and bouncing ball; sounds and static backgrounds
  • Gap practice and a viewport-filling focus view

Good to know

Switching tabs or locking the device stops the metronome. Timing also depends on the browser and audio output. Keeping the screen awake in focus view depends on browser support and may be denied or interrupted.

Can I practice keeping time without an audible click?
Yes. Gap practice alternates audible and silent bars. You can also hide the visual guide during silent bars. The sound selector offers a completely visual mode too.
Do I need an account or installation?
No. Use the tool free in your browser, without signing up or installing an app. JavaScript must be enabled for interactive features.

A little practice. A stronger pulse.

01

Set your pace

Choose 20–300 BPM or tap your tempo. Space starts and stops; T taps the tempo.

02

Shape your bar

Choose your beats per bar and tap the beat buttons to set accents or leave a beat silent. Subdivisions divide each beat equally.

03

Trust your rhythm

Gap practice alternates audible and silent bars. Keep playing and hear whether you land together when the sound returns.

Rhythm changes start a new bar. Switching tabs or locking your device stops playback; return and start again. Timing may vary with your device and audio output. Preferences are remembered only when enabled in Settings.

Online metronome FAQ

What does BPM mean on a metronome?

BPM means beats per minute. At 60 BPM there is one second between main beats; at 120 BPM there is half a second. This metronome supports 20–300 BPM.

How do tap tempo and accents work?

Tap the Tap tempo button several times or press T to set your pace. Clicking an accent button cycles through accented, normal and silent. Silent beats remain part of the bar and mute their subdivisions too.

What is the difference between beats per bar and subdivisions?

Beats per bar sets how many main beats make up a bar. Subdivision divides each main beat into two, three or four equal pulses. The BPM value still refers to the main beat.

Does the metronome keep playing in the background?

No. Switching tabs, locking the device or interrupting audio stops playback. Start it again when you return. A closed page cannot keep playing.

Are my settings saved?

Only if you enable “Remember settings on this device”. Tempo, accents, appearance and other preferences are then stored locally in your browser, not sent to us. Disabling storage or clearing preferences removes them. Reloading never starts playback automatically.

Does focus view keep the screen on?

Focus view automatically requests a screen wake lock. This requires HTTPS or localhost and browser support. Power-saving policies can deny or interrupt it, and it does not prevent manual locking. A message appears if there is a problem.
